Bucharest Gets Busy

BucharestI just returned from my third trip to Romania, and quite apart from getting a taste for sarmale and Feteasca Neagra I was amazed at the progress that has been made among the research community.

The most striking changes have been in the enthusiasm of the scientific community to get involved in European projects, and the growth of entrepreneurial businesses. Three years ago we addressed a silent room with no questions afterwards, while this time the double act with the European Commission (they encourage people to do good science, we encourage them to exploit it) resulted in the several hundred researchers present all wanting to know how to get involved.

It is an amazing transformation of a beautiful country with a tragic recent history, and with Romania joining the EU this year hopefully the economic and scientific momentum can be maintained.
