Nanoparticles in Cosmetics

The “PRELIMINARY OPINION ON SAFETY OF NANOMATERIALS IN COSMETIC PRODUCTS” by The SCCP the (Scientific Committee on Consumer Products) is being circulated for public consultation:

This report takes another step towards formalizing the concerns many scientists working with nanoparticles have long suspected – and makes pretty scary reading!

Generally this kind of concern is not currently understood by the public – and, surely, when the general public catch onto the fact that there are legitimate concerns about the products in sunscreen and many other cosmetics which have been on the market for some time, it is likely to cause a backlash against “nanotechnology”. Can we educate the general public about this area without causing panic and a nanotech backlash? We should certainly start trying because the longer this is not discussed openly, the bigger the backlash is likely to be!
